Time’s wasting, Jimmy.

Kneeling, he picked up the bag and unzipped the space that he hadn’t put the folder in.

Inside was a gun.

A gun?

He pulled it out, hands trembling as he did. First, he checked the clip and then the

chamber. Both were empty.

Never hurts, maybe Sebas made a mistake.

Not likely, he was beginning to realize, Sebas knew what he was doing and had planned

all of this very, very well.

Finally out of options, James sighed, he needed to read the contents of that envelope, the life of his best friend depended on it, the lives of his family did too, and so did his life, he realized now. Although he would likely spend the rest of it in prison if he went through with this assassination or whatever you could call it, he would probably end his own life if Monica and Olivia died because of this.

So with a weary sigh of resignation he walked down the alley, smelling the stink of

garbage that wafted from two of the big black cans that sat in front of a garage next to Sebas’

building. The wind blew and without warning it seemed to have turned cold. He’d gone from freedom and hope not two hours ago to utter despair. He crossed Bryn Mawr in a daze, not really bothering to stop for the traffic that had built up in either direction behind the lights at Broadway and Sheridan in the beginning of the evening rush period.

The Starbucks was easy to find, right at the corner of the big green building, as Sebas had said it would be. James hadn’t ever been much of a coffee drinker. Why drink something that tastes terrible or doll it up with so much cream and sugar or peppermint syrup or whatever preteen girls put in their coffee that it didn’t taste like anything it did originally when you could just have a RedBull or a nice can of sweetened condensed milk? And tea? Well, tea was for foreigners and grandmas, and Michelle, he supposed, Michelle always did like having a cup of hot tea before she went to bed. So foreigners, grandmas, and obnoxious sisters, there.

He walked around the support beam that stood in front of the angled door and as he

stepped through he was immediately struck by the heavy, earthy smell of roasted coffee and obnoxiously loud music. He couldn’t read anything with all that noise, much less something like the document he now held in his hands, the one that would walk him step by step through killing another man.

The song that was playing was something about living in a danger zone, but not the old Kenny Loggins song from Top Gun, this was some new one that had been out for only a couple years or something. James stayed in there for about thirty seconds, decided that he wouldn’t stay, wouldn’t do what Sebas told him to, he’d throw off every order that Sebas gave him that wouldn’t get his family killed if only to prove a point.
